Top places to go for a staycation in 2022
With travel still very much up in the air, it’s no surprise that experts are predicting UK travel to be very popular in 2022. In fact, many people have begun booking weekends away and week-long breaks all over. But being home to incredible coastal resorts, countryside retreats and bustling cities makes choosing a holiday destination for your UK staycation easier said than done.
Here though, we pull together some of our favourite options for all types of travellers - whether you’re looking to get away with your friends, family or maybe even alone…
Devon
A stunning county in the southwest of England, Devon boasts golden sands, fossil cliffs, historic towns and villages and national parks. Often referred to as the English Riviera, towns like Torquay, Brixham and Paignton have been attracting tourists for many years - and it’s not hard to see why.
Here, days can be spent relaxing by the water, adventuring along the South West Coast Path or enjoying a few activities on both dry and wet ground close to the Jurassic Coast. Foodies will also be delighted to know that Devon is firmly establishing itself as a culinary destination - thanks to fresh fish, incredible wines and a restaurant culture that will have you coming back for more.
The Cotswolds
Having inspired poets, writers and artists for hundreds of years, The Cotswolds is a popular staycation destination for all ages. It’s one of the prettiest places in the UK and is even home to England's prettiest village, Castle Combe. Combining the best of the UK’s countryside with quaint chocolate box villages, bustling market towns and a fantastic food and drink scene, and covering more than 800 square miles, there’s plenty to do and see here - whatever season you visit.
Why not start your day with brunch in a local tearoom, before heading to Bourton-on-the-Water for an hour wandering around the shops. If the weather’s on your side, there’s no better place to spend a few hours than by the river which meanders through. For something a little more lively, the city of Cirencester won’t disappoint and, come evening, settle down in one of the gorgeous gastropubs and enjoy some locally produced ale and food.
Scottish Highlands
This place is really one of the hidden gems of Scotland. Not because few people know about it but because there’s so much to see and do, and treasures waiting to be explored. Adventure across mountains, beaches and lochs and arrange day trips to see some imposing manor houses. Stumble across quaint villages and tiny towns. Discover tales from the legendary Loch Ness and bring the stories to life of this historical land.
Of course, Harry Potter fans will recognise the Jacobite Steam Train as the Hogwarts Express, which you can even board and travel over the 21-arch Glenfinnan Viaduct. When you’re not about and about, there's plenty of cosy cafes and pubs serving up warming whiskey and local delicacies - and while you’re here you’ve got to try some haggis…
Isle of Wight
It was supposedly the favourite holiday destination of Queen Victoria and, if it’s good enough for the Royals, it’s good enough for us. Here, you can expect everything you’d need from a British coastal break - but the attractions go much further than golden beaches. In fact, the weather here is usually rather warm - making it a perfect place for sunseekers.
The Isle is also famous for its gardens and parks, some of which house more than 150 plants and waterfalls! Ventnor Botanic Garden is even home to rare and exotic species.
North Wales
Wales makes for a great place to go, whatever the weather, thanks to its selection of beaches, countryside, cities and national parks. In North Wales, you’ll find the likes of Llandudno and Anglesey as well as Snowdonia - all of which offer incredible views, family-friendly attractions and delicious food establishments.
Another area that’s slightly less spoken about is Portmeirion, a brightly coloured village that wouldn’t look out of place on the Amalfi Coast. Outdoor adventures, beachside relaxation, shopping, theatre, music and even sports - a holiday in Wales has something to offer for all ages and budgets and continues to be a firm favourite year after year.
Peak District
If you’re looking for somewhere with all the appeal of the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales, but slightly less busy, the Peak District is a great choice. Here, you can explore the true beauty of England while visiting stately homes at the same time. It’s also a haven for walkers with plenty of routes for all abilities but if you’re in search of somewhere to relax, towns like Buxton, Matlock, Ashbourne and Tissington should definitely be on your list.
From wildlife parks to country houses, food tours and cable car experiences, the Peak District has a whole host of family-friendly activities that allow you to explore one of the most diverse landscapes around.
